moving back home & decluttering & chair makeover

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

The past week of my life has included graduating from college and moving back home to Long Island. It took me a few days to unpack all of my things and figure out a way to fit all of it back into my bedroom…and I STILL have things in boxes that have no place to go. I’ve been doing a bit of a room makeover & am on a misson to declutter and get rid of tons of things I no longer want/need. I started selling some clothes online, threw some stuff out, and I have bags of things I need to drop off at Goodwill. I got rid of my desktop computer and now have space on my desk, which i’m soo excited about. (pictures of that later)

While cleaning out my basement, I found this rad old wood chair that I knew had potential. My dad told me I could have it, and I headed over to the hardware store to get some paint. Apparently if you go to Lowe’s you can get a small sample can of paint for only 3 bucks! The can was large enough for the two coats of paint I needed for the chair, pretty good deal in my opinion.

For the leopard spots, I started off using a stencil but instead ended up free-handing it. Strangely enough the inspiration for the color of the chair and the color scheme of my room came from the Sex Pistols “Never Mind the Bollocks” album. AKA my lime green walls and my pink sheets/pink chair. On to more bedroom craft projects.

skirt fail

Sunday, April 18th, 2010

I decided that I need more cute skirts in my life.

So, I got totally inspired by this picture/outfit from Lookbook (sorry i didn’t save the original link!) and i tried to make a similar skirt, making up my own pattern.

and…..

FAIL.

It came out WAYYY too poofy. haha. Back to the drawing board to take the whole thing apart and use a lot less fabric. Oh boyyyy

“i’m a person just like you, but i’ve got better things to do…”

i finally had time to sew something…hooray for winter vacation! and hooray for badass punk band hoodies. this started as a hooded vest i made when i first started sewing…i found that i wasn’t wearing it so i added sleeves, redid the zipper and bottom band, and serged the seams. sooo much better and now i <3 it even more.

Soap making

DIY Soap!

Photobucket

I’ve always wanted to give soap making a try. (and making resin jewelry–thats for another day) I was a bit skeptical at first about ingredients but i found a brand of clear soap base that seemed fine, but i couldn’t find it specifying in the ingredients if the glycerin was animal or vegetable based. It took me awhile to realize that it smack dab on the front of the package it said something like “all natural ingredients, vegetable glycerin” So i was good to go.

We used plastic tupperware as molds (yay for not having to buy any!) and we bought some soap coloring. Everyone used real fruits; i chose sugar, brown sugar, and vanilla…yummm

I did four layers, in the bottom layer i did brown sugar but realized that wasn’t such a good idea to use so much of it. (It was falling off) It would have worked much better if it was something solid like coffee beans. In the middle i put in a cut out magazine picture of a heart :)

anddd this is the video that inspired the soap making, they made it look supaaa easy..which it was!
