T-shirt Patchwork Pillow // +tutorial

patchwork-pillow

I realized that over the years I’ve aquired lots of shirts from Threadless. I found myself not wearing them–for some reason graphic tees don’t really leave my closet. I really like the designs on my old shirts, so I wanted to put them to good use & decided on making some pillows!

tee-pillow-fabric

Pick out a couple different fabrics. I used 4 pieces of vintage fabric that weren’t big enough for a project, you can use more than four if you want it extra patch-y. This is super great for using up fabric scraps.

Lay your shirt flat & cut off the sleeves and a straight line under the neckline. Then figure out how big you can/want to make your pillow image. Pin & cut a square around your t-shirt image, use the same width and height. Mine was 11.5 inches–leave 1/2″ for seam allowance.

Cut strips of fabric that are 3 inches tall, at varying lengths. Use less than 3 inches if you want a smaller border/pillow, or more for larger. Lay out the strips so that each side has that 3 inches overhanging on one end–Except for one side.

I messed this part up at first! Arrange the strips something like this, I made my pattern reversed on opposite sides. **One side needs to be just the same size as the t-shirt side, with no extra–this is #1. Trim extra fabric that’s on each side.

Once you have it all figured out, sew or serge the patches to each other making a strip for each side. Sew to the t-shirt starting at #1–the strip with a bit less fabric. Then sew strip #2 and so on. Hopefully that wasn’t too confusing :)

Now that the front of your pillow is all done, use it to trace around some fabric or t-shirt material for the back. My finished pillow front was about 17″. Sew the front to the back right sides together, leaving a few inch gap on one side. Turn right side out & stuff or use a pillow form. Admire your pretty pillow!

The shirt I used is called, ‘A day in the life of a decadent designer.’ Isn’t the design rad? This is what my mother had to say about the image–”It’s like a mess, just like you!” Uhh..thanks Mom? Hah. I prefer to call my messes ‘Hodgepodges of creativity.’ ♥

craft: comics newspaper box

You know those storage boxes you buy at craft stores and whatnot? I can never find any in colors/patterns that I like, yuck! So I bought one with an american flag pattern, and gave it a much needed makeover. All you need to do is cut out strips/pieces of newspaper or photos & attack it with Mod Podge. Make sure you fold down and overlap the edges onto the bottom…I forgot to do that. oops! Also, one more layer of Modge Podge would have been a bit better too.
I’m kind of a zine addict, and this box holds a good amount of my collection. I had the idea to use newspaper pages, because it gives a tiny hint as to what’s inside :)

{recipe for a good mood}

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

Whenever i’m not in the best of moods (or really, whenever!!), I make it a priority to put my favorite record on and work on a project, write, or read. I’ve been wanting to make an inspiration book for the longest time, and when I saw this post I got reminded that I still haven’t made one!

I re-vamped an old notebook, I only have two pages done so far so i’ll post some pictures later.

Music that I love blaring through speakers + looking at/reading positive things = everything is better ♥

So, i’ve been working on a re-design for Completely Unfinished for a few weeks now, but I keep getting stuck. I always have a hard time designing things for myself! I’m taking my time, I want it to totally represent me & what I have now can definitely be designed better. Bear with me guys!

Craft: Lace spray paint shirt

Monday, April 11th, 2011

I haven’t been crafting or sewing too much lately, all of my focus has pretty much been on graphic design. I think I go through small phases with my hobbies & things I like to do. BUT, since the weather is starting to warm up i’m getting motivated to be super crafty again.

I had just enough lace left over from this shirt to cover the white tee & spray paint the heck out of it to make a snazzy pattern. I love how the scallop at the bottom of the fabric left a neat edge, too.

If you’re curious, I got the rad idea from here.

Clean Desk = Love

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

It feels so great to have a clean desk. Whenever I do clean it, I instantly feel more organized & being productive comes way easier. Pretty sure my desk is my favorite place/thing in my bedroom.
♥ New notepad–for list making!
♥ Planner
♥ Macbook [in need of a new one]

♥ Not pictured: my sewing machines to the left & my paper lantern
♥ Painted old frame with clothespins holding graphic inspiration
♥ My cameras (minus my polaroid) & new mini zen garden
♥ Painting found while thrifting in Florida. I love it so much..I need to find a place to hang it on my busy walls. I absolutely can’t wait until I have my own place & will have a blank canvas to load with decor & art.

P.S.- I made a new header & have been messing around a bit with the design (not sure if I like it!) so excuse how the blog looks right now. ♥ Amie
